Various wars succeeded until the Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Swabian, Angevin and Aragonese domination. To emphasize that during the Arab domination, the city took the name of Marsala (port of Alì = Mars Alì).
Going forward over the centuries, the English discovered and valued the wine vocation of the territory of Marsala. The "Bagli" (modern oenological establishments) were Born with great English entrepreneurs, among which we include the Woodhouse, Ingham, Whitacher and the Florio.
In relatively modern times, on 11 May 1860, Garibaldi landed at which the city gave contributions of men and means. Today Marsala is an agricultural, commercial, industrial and tourist centre. It has given development in particular to the wine industry producing the classic Marsala in its various typologies and appreciated in various gastronomic sectors.
